Take a deep breath. We made it through 2020. The new year has begun and it doesn’t mean that we can forget about all the difficulties we faced. It does mean that we can breathe and move forward into a new year. I never aspired to live in interesting times as I would much rather read about them in history books or snuggle up to watch a documentary about them. Twenty-five years from now, the PBS twelve part documentary on 2020 is going to be one helluva watch. There are lots of ways that people will weather this shiny new […]
Banana Bread with Prunes & Milled Flaxseed
One of my many food related quirks has to do with how particular I am about bananas. I only eat bananas that are all yellow. If they start to get spotty then the banana flavour is too strong for my tastes. So what happens to the bananas that don’t get eaten when they are perfect for me? Well, they sit on the counter getting more and more skeezy until they are ready for banana bread. Banana bread is a treat. I have tried to make it healthier in the past by using maple syrup, Greek yogurt, rolled oats, etc. in […]
Caramel Apple Chelsea Buns
This is a sponsored post for Ontario Apple Growers. As always, all opinions are my own. I remember the first time that I had a chelsea bun. My mom bought me one from a bakery that was in one of the malls in Barrie. I absolutely loved it. I always called it a cinnamon bun but I think that most people consider the ones with that white icing all over it to be cinnamon buns. I don’t eat those ones. My cinnamon buns, or chelsea buns as I learned they are called while watching The Great British Bake Off, always […]
Sour Cream Coffee Cake with Ganache Glaze
I have been in the process of rebuilding myself for a while. Since I last put up a post, I’ve had my third and very last baby. She is beautiful and sweet. She completes our family and she’s adored by everyone. Now I need to rebuild my body, my career, and find myself again so that I can make sure I can raise all these babies of mine as a whole person and not just as the harried shell I usually feel like. Part of my personal rebuild is through exercise. I have found several different workout sources that suit […]
Simply Perfect Scones
I remember the moment that I broke. I was waiting for them to announce the name of the Taste Canada winner and even though the nasty cynical part of my mind knew my name wouldn’t be called, I couldn’t help but have a last spark of hope that I was wrong. The name was called and it wasn’t mine. I crumbled inside as I sat smiling through clenched teeth as I held in my tears. I sat there thinking, “That’s it. I’m done. I just can’t try anymore.” That was the moment I broke. That was when blogging brought me to my […]
Christmas Cake
This did not start with me. I remember my mother oiling brown paper bags to line Grandma’s cake tins that were only ever used for Christmas cake. I remember my parents diligently drizzling brandy over the cakes stored in the cold cellar once a week in the month leading up to Christmas. In all those years that my mother made those cakes for my dad, I never had a piece. They seemed strange and full of lumpy fruit and nuts that I avoided as a child. Mom drifted away from making Christmas cake sometime in my teenage years. She still […]
Spiced Pear and Almond Muffins
Baking is becoming a bonding ritual with my son lately. I know that I will never have a daughter and I have tried to interest my son in dolls, colouring, and other so-called girly things so that I can find something to do with him that I can relate to. My husband plays well with him; he wrestles, makes paper airplanes and builds things with him. Since I was making muffins again, I figured the best thing to do was include him. I didn’t make a grand lesson out of it; I just had him help. Some may be more intentional […]
