There are many days where it feels like I am busy all day but get nothing done. The kitchen is a disaster, the toys are everywhere and dinner ends up being sub-par to say the least. We usually end up eating at the counter on the stools because when dinner rolls around, I just couldn’t manage to get the table even partly cleared so we could eat there before Kit starts freaking out from being hangry. I feel like I’ve been trying to clear the kitchen table for weeks and it still has mail, and other detritus all over it. After the kitchen […]
Blueberry Maple Preserves
Edit – August 2017: I have omitted adding water to the blueberry preserves I made this year because I now prefer a much thicker preserve that is more like a runny jam. I have adjusted the recipe accordingly but you can certainly still add some water if you prefer a more runny syrup. I found that I ended up with one less jar than when I added water. I also now use 1/2 pint (250 ml) jars because we were wasting quite a bit because we didn’t use a whole pint of preserves quickly enough once a jar was opened. […]
Maple Whisky Butter Tarts with a Gluten Free Crust
A Canadian Food Experience Project A Regional Canadian Food: Simcoe County and Waterloo Region in Ontario This month’s challenge for the Canadian Food Experience Project, which began on June 7th, is to share our collective stories through our regional food experiences. There are a lot of dishes that I make that harken back to my English heritage. I now live in Waterloo Region and if you visit here, you will notice that a common […]
Breakfast Banana Bread
Two weekends ago I had a pile of bananas in various stages of nastiness sitting on my counter, which can only mean one thing – banana bread. I already have a banana bread recipe on this site but it is really just a modified version of the lovely, sugar loaded, butter-infused loaf that I grew up with. In essence, my regular banana bread is cake which is nice for a treat but I wanted something that I could eat for breakfast and not feel guilty about. I didn’t want loads of sugar but I didn’t want it to taste like […]
Blueberry Maple Ice Cream
I bought an ice cream maker earlier this week and I have now discovered what will replace last month’s obsession with making jam. I bought the ice cream maker out of the goodness of my heart because my husband is going gluten free for a little while and also giving up beer, so I thought I would give him a treat. I continue to enjoy a cold beer now and then on our newly minted patio and I felt bad for him that he couldn’t have a treat. The ice cream maker that I got is a Cuisinart that I […]
