There are many days where it feels like I am busy all day but get nothing done. The kitchen is a disaster, the toys are everywhere and dinner ends up being sub-par to say the least. We usually end up eating at the counter on the stools because when dinner rolls around, I just couldn’t manage to get the table even partly cleared so we could eat there before Kit starts freaking out from being hangry. I feel like I’ve been trying to clear the kitchen table for weeks and it still has mail, and other detritus all over it. After the kitchen […]
Tried and True Quiche
You would think that I’d know better than to try a new recipe out on Christmas Day. Whether it was foolhardiness or simple arrogance in my abilities to pull it off, I decided to make a recipe I saw in the Jamie Oliver Magazine for a chocolate Buche De Noel that looked delicious. It didn’t contain any flour so I thought it would be a perfect treat for my husband who has difficulties with gluten. My mom brought her jelly roll pan since I was determined to do it right and having the right equipment often helps get a good result. […]
Spiced Pear and Almond Muffins
Baking is becoming a bonding ritual with my son lately. I know that I will never have a daughter and I have tried to interest my son in dolls, colouring, and other so-called girly things so that I can find something to do with him that I can relate to. My husband plays well with him; he wrestles, makes paper airplanes and builds things with him. Since I was making muffins again, I figured the best thing to do was include him. I didn’t make a grand lesson out of it; I just had him help. Some may be more intentional […]
Buckwheat Crepes with Caramelized Pears and Whipped Cream
One of the great things about being an adult is that nobody will give you shit for eating crepes with sugary pears and whipped cream for dinner. I have been known to also have a bowl of cereal for dinner or, like today, for lunch. Sure, there is some self recrimination that may happen but if you have homemade crepes, or my personal favourite, waffles with strawberries and whipped cream, self recrimination will be easily usurped by great satisfaction. I have been making these crepes a lot lately. Sometimes I’ve served them as dessert with different fruit and lots of […]
Simple Gluten-free Buttermilk Buckwheat Waffles
I hate breakfast in bed. I will happily get out of bed, eat breakfast and then go back to bed but I do not want the challenge of balancing a tray on my bed full of sticky food and hot coffee. If it spills I know I will have to do at least some clean up and that is just not worth it. If you like feeling like an invalid and want to eat in bed, then have at it, but I am firmly on #TeamBreakfastAtTables. I wouldn’t say I’m a waffle aficionado, but I really love waffles. I tolerate pancakes, […]
Breakfast Banana Bread
Two weekends ago I had a pile of bananas in various stages of nastiness sitting on my counter, which can only mean one thing – banana bread. I already have a banana bread recipe on this site but it is really just a modified version of the lovely, sugar loaded, butter-infused loaf that I grew up with. In essence, my regular banana bread is cake which is nice for a treat but I wanted something that I could eat for breakfast and not feel guilty about. I didn’t want loads of sugar but I didn’t want it to taste like […]
Apple Spice Pancakes
This is definitely my go-to pancake recipe that I make for Timothy and me on weekends. There is a good amount of apple in the batter and they aren’t as doughy as some fluffy pancakes can be. I decided to add some barley flour for some extra taste and for something a little different. I had originally bought the barley flour because it was a main ingredient in some really nice cookies I made from Gwyneth Paltrow’s cookbook. If you don’t have barley flour, or don’t know where to get it (or can’t be bothered), then using only all-purpose flour will be […]
